This concert will recognize the Northeast Ohio service men and women who have lost their lives fighting for our country, most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq. Throughout history, composers of every style and heritage have responded musically to a sense of loss and emptiness after losing a friend, family member, or even legions of countrymen in the throws of war. The Masterworks Chorale will present a montage of music representing a spectrum of styles and cultures and which has been written in response to, or with the express purpose of, remembrance.

Our annual gift to the community features the Masterworks Chorale and the Summit Children’s Choir (SCC) Touring Choir. This year’s concert will feature a dramatic presentation of Menoti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. The second half of the concert will once again include familiar carols sung by the choirs and audience alike culminating (as is our tradition) with the candlelight recessional of Silent Night.

"Parade of Irish Music"

You will not want to miss this Parade of Irish Music! Voices will loft throughout the beautiful Civic Theatre singing some of the most engaging music in the world -- accompanied by Celtic harps, bagpipes and Irish fiddles and flutes. A special feature of this concert will be an appearance by Akron's world-renown O'Hare Irish Dancers.

"Lincoln's 200th Birthday Celebration"

The finale concert of the 2008-2009 season will be a patriotic celebration of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. This concert will feature the Masterworks Chorale, the Summit Children's Choir Program (SCC) Touring Choir, a guest men's ensemble, full orchestra, and all 150+ children from the Summit Choral Society's 2009 Summer Vocal Camp. The Summit Choral Society will be commissioning a brand new piece using all of these forces (about 350-400 performers in all) as the central piece of the concert!
