One of the most requested 'reprises' of a concert that we have given in the past is that which featured music from the Russian Orthodox Church. This music is one example of great sacred literature from one of the world's many and diverse religious traditions that has made its way out of the confines of the liturgical realm into the main stream of music for the 'concert hall'.  Set primarily in the form of hymns, this music is as rich in harmonic and tonal variety as is the very beautiful, yet structured services from which it is often extracted.  The composers represented in this concert will be primarily from a period referred to as the "Golden Age" of Russian choral music, and dates from the late 19th century to 1917 (the beginning of the Soviet era in Russia).  This literature is incredibly beautiful, harmonically lucious, and tonally sensuous when it is both sung and heard.

Tickets: $20 and $15, all reserved seating • Discounts: 50% students, 15% seniors, Entertainment Book Coupons

7:30 pm • St. Bernard / St. Mary Church, Downtown Akron  (Directions)

The Summit Choral Society's annual gift to the Akron community features the Masterworks Chorale, the Summit Children's Touring Choir, and -- this year -- the exciting debut of a new ensemble, the Summit Children's Choir Program Alumni Choir!  The first half of this year's concert features two Magnificats for choir and orchestra.  David Pettit's Magnificat will be sung by the Touring Choir, and J.S. Bach's Magnificat will be sung by the Masterworks Chorale featuring five soloists who are all graduates of the Summit Children's Choir Program and who now have or are studying for careers in music.  The second half of the concert will introduce the new Alumni Choir, and will, once again, include familiar carols sung by the choirs and audience alike, culminating (as is our tradition) with the candlelight recessional to the singing of Silent Night

Listen to a few selctions from our 2009 concert
