On this musical journey, the Summit Choral Society's Masterworks Chorale -- joined by Leslie Parker Barnes, Charles Myricks, Jr. and musicians from Arlington Church of God, and men's ensemble Sonnenberg Station -- presents great hymns of faith from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  This experience will include styles ranging from 'classical' hymn writing to the 'Sunday School Movement'; from the Moravians to the Shakers; and from folk elements to revivalism and the camp meeting movement.  African American spirituals and both black and white gospel songs from the great revival tradition will also be part of this journey.

Throughout the concert will emerge a strong dramatic sense of emotional urgency as well as a firm 'connectedness' to the human spirit.  Much of the music will be familiar; some will be brand new; all of it will express a mystical quality of wonder, love and praise.  For such is the nature of the hymns of faith.

The Summit Choral Society's annual gift to the Akron community features the Masterworks Chorale and the Summit Children's Touring Choir.  The first half of this year's concert features two exquisite works from two very different composers: Ottorino Reshighi's beautiful musical drama depicting the nativity entitled Laud to the Nativity, and Saint-Saens' Christmas Oratorio.  The second half of the concert will, once again, include familiar carols sung by the choirs and audience alike, culminating (as is our tradition) with the candlelight recessional to the singing of Silent Night.

"Honoring our graduating seniors"

The SCC will join their magnificent voices together in this annual celebration of spring! After months of hard work, these 200+ choristers will demonstrate their vocal growth, musical maturity and collective vocal artistry as they welcome in the season when all things are made new.  This concert will also feature the presentation of college scholarships to the Summit Children's Choir Program's graduating seniors.

Masterworks Chorale ~ J.S. Bach's "St. Matthew Passion"

This presentation of Bach's supreme masterpiece by the Summit Choral Society's Masterworks Chorale will include a double orchestra, six guest soloists and nearly 100 advanced singers from the Summit Children's Choir Program.  Bach's musical interpretation of the Passion will be met with a visual representation of artwork from the Renaissance and Baroque eras depicting the events of this week in the life of Jesus, enhancing the emotional impact of this very poignant work.
