Twenty years ago, the Summit Choral Society Board of Directors had the vision to provide to the greater Akron area a unique vocal music education program for children based on the Zoltan Kodaly method of attaining musical literacy. This program has grown steadily with a present membership of over 250 participants comprised of singers in grades two through twelve from almost 100 area schools throughout 6 counties (see a list of schools). Offered at three locations: West Akron, Ellet and Coventry campuses
Our Preparatory Division offers beginning singing classes for new singers currently in 2nd - 4th grade. There is no audition to join our Preparatory Division. Beginning Singing classes are for young singers who would like to experience a choral arts program and begin to develop their singing skills. We offer class sessions each fall (late-August through December) and spring (early-February through mid-May) at our main campus at Coventry High School and our two satellite locations. Our satellite locations include the West Akron Campus, located at Resnik CLC, and the Ellet Campus, located at Ritzman CLC. Each 15-week session culminates with an on-stage concert performance with their class level and with over 200 singers from our concurrently running programs for the Training and Ensemble Divisions. Singers may continue in Beginning Singing classes through several sessions. Also, singers may, based on individual in-class evaluations and their personal desire to progress to an advanced level, move to our Training Division (located at the Coventry Campus). Main Campus, Coventry High School - For experienced singers in 3rd - 10th grade who would like to join our 30-week Vocal Education Program. All singers in both the Training Division and Ensemble Division meet every Monday evening at Coventry High School in Coventry Township near Portage Lakes from Sept. through May with two on-stage concerts. Membership to the our Coventry Campus is extended after an individual interview/audition for each candidate is held. Singers are then placed at one of seven different levels or ensembles relative to their own musical experience and demonstrated skill. After initial placement, each singer progresses at his/her own speed and ability to grasp the skills required for advancing to the next level. Tuition is $395 for the program with a $40 discount for early registration.

The Summit Choral Society realizes that the future of choral singing lies with today's children, and that it is in this stage of human development that young minds determine their values, feelings and perceptions about all of the arts.
